a brief club history

Sussex Shotokan Karate-Do association was formed in 1988 by Mac Afzali (Chief instructor) along with Ian Hollidge, Tony Alsop and Andy Paul. The aim was to teach the principles and ideals of Shotokan Karate from the Nakayama lineage. After a few years Sensei Ian Hollidge took over the reigns and successfully grew the club. Teaching Hundreds of students and keeping the Traditional values of martial arts alive. Sensei Ian decided to take a more relaxed roll in the club and retired from teaching in 2019.

In the early years the SSKD had many clubs across East Sussex. Here is a list of our previous instructor:- Andrew Paul – Bruce Harrington -Chris Pryor – Chris Sharp – Elaine Alsop – Graig Hill – Walter Piper – Zoltan Dienes.

I’ve been training with the SSKD since 2010 returning after a long break, I haven’t looked back since. Karate has a different effect on everybody but it’s helped me with strengthening my mind, composure, clearer mental capabilities and more self confidence. Not only does it strengthen the entire body it improves coordination, quickens reflexes, builds stamina and overall general health
